Pairing your two‑way radio with a Bluetooth headset is a great idea if you want to communicate untethered and hands‑free.

And it can’t be that hard, right?

Well, it’s not always easy, either. In this blog we’ve put together tips, tricks, and background information that has helped our customers pair their two-way radio with a bluetooth accessory.

Bluetooth Basics

It may be hard to believe, but Bluetooth technology has only been around since 1994. It was created by the Dutch inventor Jaap Haartsen and developed by Bluetooth Special Interest Group.

It uses UHF radio waves to transmit data wirelessly for short distances, generally up to 30 feet. It uses the same frequency as cordless phones and WiFi routers.

The name Bluetooth comes from the Danish King, Harald Bluetooth, who brought warring factions together.

In the same way that the old king brought together different Danes, Bluetooth is uniting printers, speakers, headsets, microphones, and now two‑way radios.

Two‑Way Radio Accessories

There are plenty of reasons why people might want to use a Bluetooth headset with two‑way radios.

Public safety workers need maximum flexibility, and people working in manufacturing facilities shouldn’t have to worry about stepping around cords. Education staff and administrators, hotel front desk personnel — all of these people are good candidates for using a Bluetooth headset because it enables them to step away from the radio and still stay in touch.

These days, the majority of Motorola’s two‑way radios are Bluetooth enabled. Many of the MOTOTRBO™ radios, for example, are capable of pairing with a headset. A good number of these devices can operate 30‑50 feet away from the parent device.

But just because something is capable doesn’t mean you can just take it out of the box and use it.

There’s a bit of programming that your two‑way radio service provider needs to do first, to make your pairing work.

The Art of Pairing

Non‑display radios are a little tricky this way, because there’s no screen. In those cases, the radios have programmable buttons that we can assign: Bluetooth connect and Bluetooth disconnect.

The Bluetooth‑capable two‑way radios with displays are a little easier. Many of us have paired a Bluetooth printer or speaker, and it works just like that. You just access it through the menu of the portable radio.

Then press the button that says “find devices” and go from there.

But, the service provider still needs to activate Bluetooth before it will work.

Your Friend, the User’s Guide

Your two‑way radio provider can talk you through how to pair your device.

Motorola’s website has great information on Bluetooth accessories. Some of them are specifically designed for police officers, maintenance workers, or first responders.

There are YouTube videos galore on pairing devices, because it seems like everyone’s doing it.

And don’t forget your portable radio’s user guide: It does a fantastic job of talking you through the pairing process in a logical way. Sometimes I’ll print out just the Bluetooth section and share it with people who are trying to figure it out.

If you buy a Motorola accessory that is Bluetooth enabled, the company provides a handy booklet that will help you with the pairing process.

It might be a little confusing at first, but once you get it, it usually works out for people.

Compatibility Matters

If you plan on using a Bluetooth Headset in your work, your two‑way radio service provider can make sure the devices are going to get along. To pair properly, the two‑way radio needs to

Use Bluetooth 4.0 (the latest version, and the one that comes with the latest Apple products). Your two-way radio maintenance provider can make sure your devices are set up for Bluetooth capabilities.

Use push‑to‑talk technology. This allows you to talk to someone with the push of a button.

Don’t Forget to Charge

Some people are hesitant to try Bluetooth because they already have to worry about keeping so many devices charged.

But for others, Bluetooth is necessary, and charging that headset is just part of their routine.

On average, the batteries should stay charged from 8 to 10 hours, sometimes up to 20, so it probably won’t inconvenience you too much, if you get in the habit of charging it when you’re not working.

Worry Less and Communicate More

We all have enough going on these days. We shouldn’t have to worry about something like Bluetooth pairing. Luckily, there are a lot of resources out there to help us all figure it out.

My main piece of advice is to plan ahead. If you are shopping around for two‑way radios, be sure to let your account executive know that you plan on using Bluetooth accessories.

With their help, you can eliminate frustrating experiences and get moving — and talking.

When you are on a motorcycle, a standard two-way radio handheld isn’t going to do. We can’t imagine that your insurance company would be massive fans of you taking your hands off the handles to make a quick call. The police probably wouldn’t be all that happy about it either.

You probably don’t need two-way radio communication training to know that a quality two-way radio headset for motorcycles is the safest way to communicate when you’re out for a ride with others. Don’t just get a handsfree kit for a normal handheld radio. Get something that is actually built for the job. We recommend a nifty little product from Freedconn. Let’s talk about it.

The Two Way Radio Designed Specifically for Motorcycles

Well, OK. It operates on radio frequencies. Communication devices like this tend to do that. However, it isn’t a radio in the traditional sense of things. This is because the Freedconn does not have radio channels as such. Instead, with this device, you will be directly paired with the other devices you have connected to it. You have absolutely no control beyond this. We love that. When we are bombing along the road on a motorcycle, we don’t want anything too fiddly. no turning into certain stations or what have you. We want something that we can communicate by using a single button press. That is what we can do with this radio.

The Freedconn also works with Bluetooth that you can pair up to your phone. This means being able to listen to music, and also being able to make phone calls.

Range

Since this is a small unit and doesn’t really boast much in power, the range of the Freedconn is minimal. It is only going to allow you to communicate with the other rider if they are at a maximum of 700 to 850 yards from you. Any further than this, and it simply doesn’t work. You don’t even get a warning that the other radio is out of range. It just doesn’t work. You will be talking to yourself without a response.

That being said, for such a small unit, and the fact that it is rather limited in terms of radio frequencies, the range is pretty decent. You can tell that Freedconn put a lot of effort into perfecting their technology.

Oh, and if that wasn’t enough, the radio is designed to work at high speeds. It has been built specifically for this purpose. Other similar units may struggle to maintain a connection at a high speed, but as long as you are traveling below 75 miles per hour, this radio is going to work great. This makes for a great two way radio for cycling as well.

How Does It Work?

One of the reasons why we recommend this radio so heavily is because it is ridiculously simple to use. When your set of two arrives, they should already be paired to one another and you can just charge them a little before heading out. You can also add a third headset into the mix, although that is the absolute maximum the system can support.

Once they are paired, the devices will be looking for an audio signal from the other. If it finds it, the signal will be broadcast. Obviously, this is a process that takes a fraction of a second. This allows for instant communication. Due to the way in which this all works, the company actually brands it as an intercom system as opposed to a two-way radio.

Talking is done via a single button press. Just hit it, and you will instantly be patched through to the other radio. It will instantly cut out their music or whatever else they were doing. Obviously, as long as you are within range, you know that they can hear you.

The whole system is simple to set up too. It takes no more than a few minutes to attach it to your helmet. Once it is there, it won’t get in the way. This is great since competing products can be a bit cumbersome.

Battery Life

The battery life on this is truly great. In standby mode, you will get a cool 300 hours. If you are in the telecom mode, you will have 7-hours of talk time. This is ridiculously high. This makes this system perfect for those long road trips. If you keep your talking to the important bits and pieces only (i.e. what route you should take next), then you could easily go 5 to 6 days without needing to charge this.

Charging is exceedingly quick too. So, once the power has completely drained, you will be back on the road before you know it!

Bonus Features

There are a few bonus features built into the Freedconn system. We can’t imagine you will use all of them, but they are still worth knowing about:

Functions as a normal Bluetooth headset, meaning you can answer your phone with it

Built-in FM radio

Acts as voice control for your phone, allowing for control of apps like the GPS

You can listen to music through it

Downsides

There is one massive downside to this system. We do think that the range could have been improved some. While those on motorcycles do seem to stick together for the most part, there may be a time where you are more than a half mile or so apart. If you are at this distance, then the intercom is not going to work very well. We get why this is the case. It is down to the radio technology they used. However, it would have been brilliant if the range could have been doubled. It would have ensured that the Freedconn worked perfectly for all road travel.

» Check Amazon Pricing, Pictures & Amazon Reviews

Conclusion

When it comes to a quality two-way radio headset for motorcycles, this product is nigh on unbeatable. Yeah. The range is going to be a little bit annoying at times, but the rest of the features this radio boasts more than makes up for it. It is a must-buy for any motorcyclist traveling in groups.

The Best Two Way Radio for Cycling is the FreedConn

The FreedConn is a two-way radio, although not the same two-way radio that you are familiar with. Perhaps the best way to describe this device is as an intercom. It allows you to communicate with the other radios in the set ONLY. Up to 3 headsets can be paired together. You will not be able to access any other radio channels with it, as it’s designed specifically for handfree communication with those you’re riding with.

It is so much more than a radio, though. Packed into this device is a Bluetooth connection that can ‘chat’ with your GPS or phone. This way you can use it as a headset when you are on the road, making it a great two way radio headset for motorcycles as well. Although, we are going to strictly focus on the benefits of this being a two-way radio here. However, just remember that it can do a whole lot more than what we are going to discuss.

Why The FreedConn Stands Out

This is a device that has been designed from the ‘ground-up’ for riders. It has actually been designed for those riding motorcycles, but you should have no issues cycling with it. In fact, we reckon it is going to work a lot better than if you were riding a motorbike.

As we said before; this device has been designed to communicate with the other device in the set. The radio frequency is fixed. Because the two pieces have been designed to work with one another, they sync up well. In fact, the audio quality is absolutely superb. These radios have been designed to work a maximum of 800 meters from one another. However, they can operate even if you are bombing along the road at 70 mph. They will not drop that connection. Obviously, you aren’t going to be cycling at 70 mph, so it is nice to know that no matter what speed you are traveling at, you can always keep in touch with the other rider.

Simple Design

Since there is no fiddling about with the radio frequencies on the FreedConn, it is nice and easy to get in touch with the other rider. In fact, all it takes is a quick push of the button on the side of the device. The other rider will be able to answer instantly. This is as hands-free as you are ever going to get with a two-way radio. This makes it perfect for cycling. You aren’t going to have to take your hands off of those handlebars for no more than a second or two.

While you won’t be looking at it all that often, there is a cool little LCD screen on the side of the device. This makes browsing through the menus an absolute doddle. This means getting your radio set up quickly is ridiculously easy. In fact, you can pair with the other device in mere seconds. This is perfect for cyclists who know that they need to keep in touch with the other rider, but they really don’t fancy trying to learn how to dabble with technology.

Installation

Initial installation is dead simple too. Although, do bear in mind that you will need to attach part of the unit to your helmet. This will need to go on the outside of the helmet to ensure that the radio can maintain a good connection with the other device. Thankfully, the design of this two-way radio is quite sexy, so we doubt that many people are going to mind about this!

As we said before; you will also find a few other features packed into the device. This includes the ability to switch on FM radio so that you can listen to music, traffic and weather reports in the area. You will be surprised how useful this is going to come in during some of the longer trips on the road.

Drawbacks

The FreedConn doesn’t work that well with similar radios from other brands. The software doesn’t seem to sync up properly. If you do have more than a 3 riders and you’ll be riding in groups, you would need multiple sets. You can easily change the group arrangements, which is limited to 3 headsets in each.

It is also a bit annoying that only two people can talk at the same time. You might have to wait to speak if 2 people are mid-conversation butit does help to keep the conversation clear. However, you must remember that this isn’t really a product designed for those who want a good chin wag while riding. It is for quick communication.

Last but not least, the battery life is worth mentioning. If you are talking all of the time, you will probably get a single day’s worth of riding out of it. This means that it probably isn’t going to be ideal for multiday trips unless you have some sort of battery bank type charger handy.

» Check Amazon Pricing, Pictures & Amazon Reviews

Conclusion

While there are a couple of downsides to the FreedConn intercom device, when it comes to the best two-way radio for cycling, this one sits right at the top of the pack. We can’t think of a single device that performs better when you need to keep your hands free while riding. We can’t even think of a simpler device to use. If you are planning on riding long distances and need to keep in touch with your other riders, then this is an absolute must buy.

Home intercom systems come in two basic forms, wired and wireless. Wired systems are usually used for new construction homes since running wire in exiting walls is expensive. If you have an old system already in the walls, then a retrofit system that works with your current wire is probably what you need. You will need to look at the cable running to the system to see how many individual “conductors” or wires are in the cable and then choose a system that works with that cable.

Most wireless systems are short range of under 1000 feet, which is sufficient for most homes. If what you require is a gate intercom system then we recommend you check our systems here instead: gate intercom systems

Below are some of the most popular choices:

Wireless Home Intercom Systems

Hosmart Full-Duplex Wireless Intercom System Model – HY616

The nicest feature of this intercom is that it is full-duplex, which means that once you answer a call, both parties can speak without having to press a button. They work more like a cordless telephone and they use the same DECT 6.0 technology.

You can call individual units but you have to press two buttons to do that. You press Call first, then the number of the unit you want to call.

These are very flexible on power. They come with an AC adapter, you can use a standard USB battery pack, you can plug it into a computer, or you can use OPTIONAL, removable 18650 rechargeable batteries. These are the kind used in flashlights. The batteries will last approximately a week of normal operation before needing recharging or swapping with a charged battery.me

The range is up to 1000 feet, however that is in an open environment with no walls in between. Range will be lower with obstructions.

Channels

The best feature on this intercom is the channel feature. There are 6 channels and you can set the default channel on each intercom so that if a user leaves their channel to talk to someone else, it will default back to it’s preprogrammed channel.

Group Button

This button enables you to call all stations no matter what channel they are on, but it is limited to 4 stations.

Monitor

To put a unit into monitor mode, press the Monitor button. The channel LED indicator will flash to show available channels on the master unit. Press the channel button that you want to monitor. The unit will be continuously monitored by other units. Press the Monitor button again to exit monitor mode. Sounds like continuous until you break the call.

Pros:

Multiple channels

Full Duplex handsfree communication

Uses DECT digital technology for secure communication and clear sound

Uses a standard 18650 rechargeable battery that can be removed and recharged. Or if plugged in the battery will charge so it can be used for battery backup.

Can monitor a room by pressing the Monitor button followed by the room number

Pressing the Group button will call all stations (up to four stations)

Cons:

Range will be limited by your environment

Adding additional sub stations to the system is a little complex

The maximum number of intercoms you can have is 6 (1 master and 5 substations)

Wuloo Intercoms Wireless – WL666

This intercom system claims it can reach distances of a mile with crisp sound quality. You should definitely be skeptical of those kind of range claims, especially on a unit that uses FM frequencies. However, most users don’t need anywhere near that range. And the range you get will be dependent on what sort of interference you have in your area. Some users complain that it wouldn’t even cover a 1500 square foot house, or that they were awakened in the middle of the night with interference on their intercoms. If you live in a highly congested area, you will likely have problems.

That said this intercom has some really nice features.

It has voice activation (VOX)mode for handsfree transmitting, but like VOX on all intercoms, you have to be sitting right in front of it

There is a channel switch you can use in case your neighbors have the same unit. There are three channels available.

Pros:

Longer range than others

Multiple channels allows private calling

Monitor mode to listen in (turns off after 10 hours)

Good volume

Cons:

Subject to whatever interference is in your neighborhood so you may get static or noise at all times of the day

If you are on the same channel as a neighbor, they will hear you

Sound quality is not great, tinny sounding

Cannot talk to someone if their unit is in Monitor mode

push to talk

Usage can be a little complex for some people

Dakota Alert MURS Long Range Wireless Intercom – DA1006

This long-range wireless intercom can communicate at distances of several miles under ideal conditions. It uses MURS (Multi Use Radio Service) frequencies which means it is compatible with any other MURS device on our website so there are handhelds, wireless outdoor intercoms, wireless PA system, doorbell intercom, front door intercom, gate intercom and other devices for home or office use.

This wireless intercom has 5 channels however you cannot set a default channel so if you make a change to the channel it will stay on that channel.

There are no features like monitor or voice activation, but the audio is nice and clear on this unit.

Pros:

Lots of other products that work with these, like outdoor intercoms and other commercial products

Has the longest range of any other product

Cons:

The multiple channels do not work well for calling individual units. No calling individual units.

More expensive than other options.

To get more info on the Dakota Alert intercom feature just click the button below:

Amazon Echo- DOT

If you have an Amazon account, there is another affordable solution, but it requires buying Amazon Echo Dots or any of their other Echo devices.

The “Drop In” feature has been added to Amazon’s Echo devices that allows you to call other Echo Dots in your system.

This capability enables you to call any Echo device that is set up to receive calls. So you name each Echo device something that’s appropriate for the location, like Kitchen, Office, or Master Bedroom and when you are near one of the Echo devices, like the Office, you can simply say “Alexa, drop in Kitchen” and you will be instantly connected. Anyone in the kitchen can just reply to your call without touching anything. When done you just say “Alexa, hang up.” So you never have to touch anything.

You can also use the Alexa app on your smartphone to drop in on any of the devices no matter where you are. Not only can you use this to call your spouse or family members while you are at the office or traveling, this capability could also be used to check in on aging relatives where ever they are as long as you’re approved to drop in on their Echo.

So not only do you get the benefits of an intercom system, but there are lots of other benefits to the Amazon Echo system, like playing music, setting calendar reminders, and asking Alexa for the answers to all life’s questions (although she isn’t as smart as Google yet).

Pros:

The best sound quality of any other device

You can be anywhere you have data service on your phone and still be able to talk to someone at home

Hands free operation

Lots of other uses for the device other than communication

Cons:

You require an Amazon account to be able to use these

These may be a little too complex for non-techy people to set up

To get more info on the Amazon Echo with the added intercom feature just click the button below:

Wired Intercom Systems

If you have an existing intercom system that needs to be replaced, then you will need a retrofit intercom system. If you are building a house and running new wire you can install any system. We will cover the retrofit system here.

Instrasonic Retro Music & Intercom System

This is a good choice (and one of the few choices left) for replacing an old intercom system mounted in your home. It uses your existing wiring (assuming the wires are still good).

Since your room stations will be a different size than these Intrasonic stations, you need to choose a kit that has either horizontal or vertical adapter trim plates. If your room stations are wider than they are tall, choose a horizontal kit. The vertical kit is for stations that are more tall than wide.

You will also need to measure your current master station and make sure the trim plate included in the kit is large enough to cover the hole in your wall.

Once you have all the system components, you will replace all components of your current system, including the power supply.

The system provides a nice upgrade since it has Bluetooth, which allows you to stream music from your smartphone.

Pros:

Easy installation since wire is already in place.

Nice feature set

Bluetooth streaming to play music throughout the house

You can attach optional ceiling speakers to the system as well

This system can be used for new construction too using a minimum 3-conductor, 22 to 24 gauge cable

Cons:

You may need to use adapter plates to cover the old intercom holes and these are larger than your old intercom stations

The system only supports up to 13 rooms/patio/door stations

Requires 110 volts to the master so it may need an electrician to install a power outlet by it

Residential gate access control systems are used at both pedestrian gates and driveway gates to not only give visitors access, but also to communicate with them. You can remotely open the gate assuming you have an electric gate controller installed.

There are entry systems for both single-family and multi-family buildings or developments. The multi-family units may handle as many as 500 units.

Systems can include video or just audio. Video systems typically give people with smartphones the ability to see who is at the gate using their phones or tablet PCs. Either system can have the ability for people to talk to visitors even if they aren’t home.

Various technologies are available for entry systems. The most traditional are systems that require a wire run between the gate and building. An inside station that mounts on the wall is used for communication and access control.

Next are systems that use wireless radio frequencies. These are typically audio only and may have a significant range, which is farther than you can typically get with video systems.

If you can’t get a wireless signal to your gate, but you do get a strong cell phone signal there, then a cell-phone-network-based system may work. These will call any landline or cell phone so you don’t have to be home to talk to visitors. These will have a monthly bill for the cell phone service.

Lastly there are systems that use a Wi-fi signal from your house or business. A Wi-Fi extender may be needed to ensure a strong signal at the gate so this requires an extra equipment expense and extra installation. Wi-Fi access systems communicate over the Internet to smartphones or tablet PCs. As long as you have access to the Internet, you can see and talk to visitors at your gate. There are also systems that have a mix of these technologies.

Many units have built-in keypads so you can give code access to visitors so they can open the gate without calling. The cell phone network intercoms can be programmed with a visitors phone number so all they have to do is call the gate and it will open based on their Caller Line ID. Wi-Fi systems may have Bluetooth so people can use their smartphone to open the gate by simply being in proximity to the access control system.

The gate access control system that will work best for you depends on your installation environment and your budget. We can ensure that you get the best system for your needs. Just call us at 888-298-9489 and let our experts help.

When considering the capacity, coverage, and features of two‑way radios, most industries are learning that there is really no comparison when it comes to analog vs. digital radio.

Since both options are available at this time, we hope to share some wisdom from what we’ve learned.

Analog vs. Digital Radio: A Brief History

Radio technology has evolved rapidly over the past century. After some pioneering discoveries by inventors such as Heinrich Rudolph Hertz and Nicola Tesla, Italian inventor Guglielmo Marconi created the first wireless telegraphy system in 1894.

Until the 1980s, radios used vacuum tubes, and tubes turned into transistors. Eventually, transistors turned into micro processors. These days, most communication systems are software based.

In 1983, the world changed again with the invention of cellular telephones. They began as analog devices, but they have evolved for the digital age. That’s why we have things like caller ID, streaming, and other conveniences we now take for granted.

Two‑way radio technology advanced at a slightly slower pace. These days, smaller systems are often still analog, while larger systems use digital technologies, known as time‑division multiple access (TDMA) or frequency‑division multiple access (FDMA).

Is Analog or Digital Better for You?

Even though we’re thankful for analog devices for all the service they have provided over the years, most of the recent innovations are in the digital arena.

And if you’re a fan of analog, digital radios can also operate in analog mode.

But let’s talk about some of the reasons why people say they are making the switch to digital.

Increased Range

Two‑way radios involve communicating between at least two people, and sometimes dozens or even hundreds. In today’s global market, commercial systems and public safety organizations often require a wider area of coverage. That’s what Digital Mobile Radio (DMR) does, converting analog radio signals to digital. That data can be sent and received anywhere around the world.

Here’s another difference to note when it comes to range. When the user of an analog radio system reaches the end of the range of the coverage region, the audio becomes more and more faint, with increasing levels of background static. With digital, the quality of the audio starts to change to become more “robotic,” “mechanical,” or “broken” before dropping out altogether.

As companies grow and their communications needs grow, many rely on trunked systems like Capacity Plus and Linked Capacity Plus. Trunked radio relies on “repeaters” to re‑transmit radio signals to expand the coverage of the devices. With signals going further, devices can transmit information across greater distances, making interdepartmental communication possible, even when the team spans regions or continents.

Increased Capacity: Two‑fers

In many areas, two‑way radios are allowed to use 12.5KHz of bandwidth for each transmit channel. Analog radios can only transmit one voice channel using this spectrum, but because of the use of voice compression and the DMR protocol, digital radios can transmit two voice channels using the same bandwidth.

That’s two voice channels for the price of one. BOGO. A two‑fer.

Clarity

Analog two‑way radios transmit every sound that the microphone picks up, including wind and background noise. You can imagine what that does in a manufacturing facility. Interference causes status, and voice transmissions can get garbled. It’s called signal degradation.

Digital radios are designed to transmit just the speaker’s voice, not the machines or voices in the background.

You just get a lot clearer sound with digital.

Advanced Features

There are other things that digital radios can do that analog radios can’t, such as voice encryption, bluetooth, GPS location services, texting and emails, and system alarm and control.

Don’t Fear the Future

If you’ve been working with analog two‑way radios for years, or even decades, we get it: Changing technology can be intimidating.

But we are truly astounded by the advances in digital technology. Many people are reporting that they are improving efficiency and performance by making the switch.

You don’t have to switch over an entire fleet of radios immediately. There are many flexible solutions that allow you to transition when you are ready, based on your time, budget, capacity, and needs.

Maybe it’s time to talk to an experienced two‑way radio service provider about your communication needs.

Construction work is known as a very hands-on industry. But the rising of technology has slowly but surely made its way into the profession. Breakthroughs in technology and “gadgetry” have evolved the entire landscape of this craft, making it more productive, more poised, and most importantly, more effective.

Because the profession involves a lot of health risks and means workers will always be surrounded by harsh work environments, creating complementary and reliable tools was always challenging.

The construction industry has been resistant to new technology and gadgets because there’s no place for experimenting when in this business. Tools must be easy to use, easy to learn, and should be effortlessly implemented into an average workday while boosting productivity. Some of the best rated job site radios were the fanciest gadgets you could get at construction site, but it all changed.

The construction industry has been thriving without the distractions of new, supposedly advanced technology, gear, and gadgets until it could no more. Most constraints are associated with complacency and risks of trying out newly developed items that may still be “buggy”.

As a result, the main gadgets, products, and gear that are involved and striving in the industry are either upgrades for already existing and indispensable items or gadgets that replace and precede old-timey items, services, and methods. This list will compile the most sought-after construction-related products and some of the leading technologies in the United States today.

Sonetics Bluetooth Headset

The Sonetics Bluetooth Headset eliminates the need for crackly walkie-talkies, hand signals, or uncomfortable foam earplugs. Workers can access multiple channels, meaning they can easily talk to each other, while messages from the boss come through on all channels.

Its distance radius is up to two miles, and thanks to advanced development, this headset can control how much background noise gets through, so sometimes it might even be handy when standing next to each other. But possibly its best feature is its weather resistance, as it can withstand almost all weather conditions.

Xoeye Technologies Safety Glasses

Safety glasses are one of the top priorities on any construction site. But with these smart glasses by Xoeye Technologies, any contractor can feel like 007 on the job. These handy accessories are not just for safety. They have built-in cameras, as well as projected screens. With access to Wi-Fi, a worker can perform precise tasks, including 3D mapping schematics while on the go.

This might be one of the top advancements in construction gadgets yet. It boosts time efficiency by not having to search and look through blueprints and plans and also helps avoid risky mistakes along the way. And because construction workers value results over anything, this is the perfect product on the market.

“Halo” Helmet Light

Hands-free lighting is not a new invention. From the LED light to all sorts of flashlights, hands-free lights are a part of an everyday household today.

But Halo light changes the way a construction worker uses this accessory. It can be wrapped around any hard-brimmed helmet and can make workers visible for up to a quarter of a mile at a 360-degree angle.

Its battery life span is up to 36 hours, and it’s not in the way for the workers either.

The construction business can avoid a lot of unnecessary accidents with this handy tool. It’s important to have the necessary lighting to not only see what you’re doing, but that can make the location of co-workers visible.

But apart from being visible and putting safety first, the Halo helmet light can also clearly illuminate any task before the worker, making the work much easier and safer. It’s also weather-resistant, so after purchasing it, workers can hardly get rid of this gadget.

Smart Clothing

There are all sorts of smart clothing available for construction workers to make their jobs easier and safer. There are a lot of unfortunate and avoidable accidents from loose, not visible, or unfit clothing. A handy accessory is a heated jacket (or cooling jacket) that helps workers get the job done under harsh weather conditions. These are called “responsive clothing”, and they can adapt to the curveballs Mother Nature throws our way. The construction industry is ruled by the one-size-fits-all mentality, which can sometimes cause some accidents if workers are not careful enough.

But the industry has gone beyond basic safety concerns and reached an all-time high when researchers in Germany answered the age-old question: what about life-threatening substances that can’t be seen or heard? The construction site is often filled with toxic liquids and gases. These protective gloves lower the chances of exposure to toxic substances by changing color when these materials are handled.

Laser Scanners & Laser Measurers

The use of lasers in the construction industry is nothing new. With laser scanners, people can effectively capture 3D models more efficiently than plans or video footage can. The newest laser scanner models can better understand the connection behind projects and more reliable data.

Another common use for lasers on a construction site is the laser measurer and level. Today, the measure and level most commonly comes as a two-in-one gadget and can eliminate the struggles of planning and boost time efficiency. While this is not a new invention, it is a tool that every contractor gladly uses and will always remain the “little black dress” of all construction gadgets.

Smart Helmet by Daqri

The Daqri Smart Helmet is so much more than just a safety helmet. It uses augmented reality to make construction easier, safer while avoiding costly mistakes.

Workers can access any information at the drop of a hat, and they will appear on the visor in front of them. This system shows measurements and details on the go, putting them in context so workers can see the entirety of the project and the connections of smaller tasks at all times.

The Smart Helmet supports HD video recording, 3D mapping, 360-degree navigation cameras, photography, and more. With access to all data, the gadget proves to be a very useful gadget for boosting productivity, lowering the chance of risks, and promoting time efficiency.

Drones

Drones are becoming very popular in multiple industries. Because of their versatile and resistant nature, they can be used for anything from advertising to construction projects.

A drone is great for planning, mapping, and even during construction. Drones can come in handy for constant real-time documentation. As a result, high-quality videos can demonstrate the entire process from beginning to end without much effort needed from employees.

After the project is complete, a drone can offer all documentation by creating surveys from the machine.

Companies like Kespry have created and developed drones specifically for construction use. This drone can autonomously monitor hundreds of acres while conducting various activities at the same time. The only thing a human has to do is plot the area using a map, and the drone does all the work from then on. Everything from the first flight to the collection processing of the data has been perfected by the company to fit the construction industry.

Extreme Post-It

Telling someone to do something is not always effective, as both parties will probably forget the information by the time they get there. Writing on the walls is rarely an option, and a note on a napkin is hardly a solution. This is where the genius product of Post-It comes in.

The Extreme Post-It was made for the job site to stick to practically anything from brick to gravel and withhold most conditions. Among the different types of written notes, this is the king of notes for the construction business. When it comes to paper, these are the ones to beat.

The Coldest Water

The Coldest Water prides itself on producing the go-to water bottles for laborers on the construction site. Hydration is possibly the most important thing when doing physical work outdoors. So much so that it’s one of the highest priority health risks to take care of next to wearing the necessary attire.

This bottle is made to withstand harsh weather conditions like rises in temperature and humidity while keeping anything inside safe and cold. It’s straightforward to use and has a lightweight design to make it less of a hassle because, after all, contractors hate one thing more than anything, and that’s wasting time and energy.

Amateur radio operators everywhere are using what is called “Ham radios”. With these, they can communicate with other radio hobbyists, and radio talk becomes easier.

In contrast to CB radios, only people with the right license can operate an amateur radio device, all the while adhering to the limitations and rules enforced by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

But those who already have a Ham radio device, and the right license to use their unit, might wonder how to utilize the radio to its maximum potential? The are multiple factors to consider and this article will go over the basics of radio technology, how radio range works, and ultimately what the range of a Ham radio is.

What is Ham Radio?

In many countries around the world, governments allocate a small portion of the radio spectrum for non-commercial use. This is mostly used by ordinary citizens who’ve demonstrated towards a government office the ability to use this spectrum properly.

In the United States, Amateur Radio regulations are enforced and administered by the FCC. Ham users are only authorized to use their devices and frequencies for non-commercial use.

Hundreds of thousands of ordinary people of all ages have completed the tests required for Ham radio usage. They are mostly hobbyists interested in the different aspects of radio from its technical workings to its social effects and everything in between.

An amateur radio operator typically uses his wide array of equipment at a station to engage in two-way radio communication with other Ham radio operators using the same radios on the assigned frequencies. Worldwide, these limitations and rules are assigned and enforced by the International Telecommunication Union. Most of the time, a Ham is a handheld two-way radio device that runs on one battery for about 18 months.

Ham devices are very commonly used in case of emergency. Occasionally, default communication systems either fail or become overloaded. This is when the Amateur Radio Service comes in handy as it can be used by everyone ranging from the military to the police and fire department.

Because of this, there are frequencies reserved for emergency use only, so that in case of unforeseen emergencies those never become overloaded. Most Ham radio devices are handheld but also include business radio (BRS), airband radio, walkie-talkies, and more.

What Are Radio Signals?

Radios transmit and receive electromagnetic waves. The radio’s signal is an electric current moving back and forth rapidly. The transmitter radiates this field via an antenna, then a receiver translates it to the audio heard through your device.

Radio waves transmit easily through the air, and also can be “bounced” or reflected to change direction. Bouncing entails shooting radio waves straight up into the sky, and they end up bouncing back from the earth’s ionosphere.

In contrast, reflecting means that an electromagnetic wave has encountered a change in medium, therefore some radio waves will be reflected. The part of the wave that enters the new medium is called the transmitted wave, while the other is called the reflected wave.

What Is A Repeater Station?

Even the best portable ham radios need a device called a “repeater station” is used to amplify radio signals. It increases the power of a signal and retransmits it, allowing it to travel even further. Amateur radio repeaters receive signals and retransmit them to a higher power. This is a sure-fire way to increase your communication range.

A repeater station extends your communication range if you key your microphone button to transmit through (or access) the repeater station. Most repeaters are open, therefore can be used by anyone who accesses them within range. But some repeaters have limited access, and some are restricted to exclusive groups or members of a club.

Ham Radio Range Basics

Ham radios are most commonly used in situations when the internet, phone lines, and other forms of communication are limited or non-existent. With the knowledge and application of radio range basic rules, you can theoretically talk all around the world on a Ham radio.

The maximum communication distance you can reach depends greatly on your device and location. The frequency you’re using, the transmitter’s output power, the type of your antenna, and propagation conditions all influence your true range.

Yet, the biggest factor is the frequency you’re transmitting on. Realistically, you can reach an about 2-18 mile range with handheld radios. However, this range is always circumstantial. If you manually enhance your radio’s strength or your base station, you can reach hundreds of miles.

An important factor to always consider regarding range is that all frequency ranges stated on any unit are considered to be its “theoretical range”. This is because we rarely, if ever, experience conditions that are absolutely perfect for radio transmission. Because anything, from buildings to terrain, can influence our range both in transmission and in reception. So when trying to figure out the true range of your unit, you should consider Frequency, Antenna, Interference, and Signal Strenght as the most important.

Signal Type & Frequency

In the US, Ham users can use 26 different radio bands or groups of frequencies with their devices. According to the National Association for Amateur Radio, this is everything above 1.8MHz to 275GHz. This range technically covers HF, UHF, VHF, SHF, and EHF frequencies.

Whether you’re able to reach a friend two houses over, or someone living in India also depends on the meter band that you use. Therefore, the frequency you use majorly influences your range.

Most Ham operators usually stick to UHF or VHF frequencies. EHF (extremely high frequency) is almost only used by satellite radios, and UHF radios (ultra-high frequency) are mostly used by hospitality, manufacturing, or the Family Radio Service (FRS).

FRS radios are used for private two-way communications for facilitation family or group activities, and since 2017, the FCC limits FRS channels to a specific communication range in order to moderate their use.

Simple HF is used by AM radio. FRS radios are able to communicate with Ham devices, but a Ham radio can only FRS if it has a wide enough receiver.

VHF frequency bands (very high frequency) work between 30-300MHz. These are commonly used by maritime, emergency, traffic control, and military systems. They’re also used by aviation radios and for broadcasting on FM radio.

VHF signals have longer wavelengths than UHF signals, meaning that they can travel further without less unwanted interference. So if you want to transmit as far as possible, the right choice for you would be the VHF band. However, the key downfall is that buildings and tall objects can make radio signals weaker. Having said this, it’s best to use VHF in long-distance communication and outdoors, where the receiving device is either in line of sight, or it’s deductible that there are no obstacles in the way of transmission.

In contrast, UHF radio technology (ultra-high frequency) and its bands are found somewhere between 300MHz and 3GHz. This means that they have shorter wavelengths and more energy compared to their VHF counterpart, translating to them being more reliable in areas with a lot of obstacles like trees, buildings, or hills.

But because UHF is less effective in long distances than a VHF signal, it’s used commonly for mobile radio, GPS, Wi-Fi, walkie-talkies, or Bluetooth devices. Mobile radios (also known as mobiles) are usually licensed land-based radios used for wireless communications which rely on radio frequencies and where the path of communication is movable on either end.

In conclusion, what this means for amateur radio users is to choose the right frequency band appropriate for your location, or your intentions. As someone who is just starting out, you should either choose a frequency for your location and stick with it or switch bands according to their specific intentions.

Not all radio signals are optimal for short-distance use either, which is why only sticking to the longer VHF frequency is not the best decision either.

Antenna

The height and location of your antenna are very important for any radio operator. The higher your antenna, the better the range will be. Also, an antenna standing straight up can improve reception.

The antenna is most important at frequencies higher than 2MHz, as anything above this works on your line of sight, and can’t bend around the curvature of the Earth. Therefore, even when considering long-range communication, know that above this frequency, the maximum communication range will be from the location of your antenna to the distance of the horizon.

Theoretically, this means that if an antenna – or a handheld radio – is positioned at 5’ off the ground, you’ll have the “theoretical range” of 3.16 miles. But if your antenna or your device equipped with an internal antenna is located 20’ off the ground, it would have a range of 6.33 miles.

There are a lot of ways to calculate the distance of the horizon, including using apps or online calculators. The whip antenna is most commonly known by the average person. These are commonly seen on the top of cars, and the longer they are, the better the reception of the car radio will be.

Actually, the whip antenna can also be used by amateur radio operators. Although, whether you should or whether you can use a whip antenna mostly depends on your location and your device. There are different types of whip antennas, and some can be used with handheld Ham radios as well.

Taking this into consideration, a quick fix of range would be increasing the height of your antenna. But know that it’s not only up to your transmitting antenna, but also the location of the antenna you’re trying to reach. These calculations of knowing where the horizon is will always be theoretical, so don’t be surprised if you can’t manage to reach everything in that radius.

Radio waves generally travel best with the most optimal conditions, that’s why most people use their antenna and or their radio primarily outdoors. Not all antennas support various radio brands, so it’s important to get the right model.

Most Ham operators use handheld antennas for the easiest use, but for some, these are not effective enough. So before purchasing any type, make sure to do your research, and also be aware of where you’ll be using your device from, and for what purpose.

Ham radio users have what is called a “base station”. This base is used as a station for amateur radio operators, and today, they’re usually controlled and operated from a remote location. Most of these remote stations have similar features to any other amateur radio station, but can be controlled over a wired connection, the internet, or by radio.

Base station antennas are usually mounted antennas. These are most commonly antennas mounted on towers that make radio communications possible, serving as a hub of local wireless networks, sometimes even as the gateway between wired and wireless networks. In general, they consist of a low-power transmitter and a wireless router.

Interference

A radio signal can’t – or just barely can – travel through solid objects like mountains and buildings. Any obstacle will surely reduce your range. This is why radios can almost never reach the maximum of their theoretical range. Low-frequency signals and UHF signals “react” better in urban environments, as their higher energy wavelengths and strengths are better at traveling through buildings.

Electromagnetic interference (also known as radio frequency interference) is a disturbance generated by any external source that can affect radio transmissions. Apart from the widely known obstacles such as buildings, forests, and hills, interference can also be caused by equipment in your home.

While a radio signal passes walls easily, hairdryers, electric drills, light switches, smartphones, and their chargers, power supplies, and even lights can be seen as obstacles for your device. If you notice any interference when communicating with your unit, the first thing is to adjust your antenna, and by that, you can more easily determine the cause of the interference.

Signal Strength

The transmission power of your unit is a key capacity that affects the radio’s range and is measured in watts. In telecommunications, specifically in radio frequency, radio signal strength (or field strength) refers to the transmitter radio’s power output received by an antenna at a distance from the transmitting antenna.

While commercial radio stations broadcast between 50 thousand and 100 thousand watts, handheld radios usually only have 0.5-5 watts of power. (For most unlicensed radios, this is the maximum wattage they can reach.) Apart from this, there are also laws that limit the signal strength of amateur radio. Commercial stations generally use strong commercial broadcast antennas (usually parabolic antennas) to reach a greater range.

Simply put, the higher the signal strength of a radio, the further it can travel. So if you only have a 2-watt handheld Ham radio, your antenna’s placement and height will not be able to increase your range by much. Still, it’s a universal rule, that the higher your antenna, the better the reception and radio transmissions will be.

Overall, the range of any radio device cannot be pinpointed to a single maximum. While someone can reach 30 miles without amplifying the signal, the same radio in a different location can be limited to just 5 or 10. This is why before investing in anything, you should consider your location and your intentions before starting to amplify your range.
