FAQ

Q1: What is the USDX SDR QRP Transceiver?
A: The usDX is a simple and experimental (Class-E driven) SSB and CW SDR transceiver. It can be used to make QRP SSB contacts, or (in combination with a PC) used for the digital modes such as FT8, JS8, FT4. This approach simplifies the design where possible while keeping reasonable performance. The result is a cheap, easy to build, versatile QRP SSB transceiver that is quite suitable for making QSOs, even in contest situations.

Q2: What bands and modes does the USDX support?
A: The USDX QRP shortwave transceiver operates in LSB, USB, and CW modes, covering the 40m, 15m, and 20m amateur radio bands. All-mode support includes USB, LSB, CW, AM, FM. It can be fully-continuous tuned through bands 80m-10m in the LSB/USB-modes with a 2400Hz bandwidth and has up to 5W PEP SSB output.

Q3: What is the difference between USDX-CW and USDX-FT8 versions?
A: The CW version supports LSB, USB, and CW modes but does not support FT8. The FT8 version is added with Bluetooth function. Through the firmware upgrade interface, you can update the firmware for USDX-CW or USDX-FT8 transceiver. Later, the firmware of CW and FT8 versions can be flashed for each other.

Q4: What are the DSP features of the USDX transceiver?
A: DSP filters include: 4000, 2500, 1700, 500, 200, 100, 50 Hz passband. DSP features include Automatic Gain Control (AGC), Noise-reduction (NR), Voice-triggered Xmit (VOX), RX Attenuator (ATT), TX noise gate, TX drive control, Volume control, and dBm/S-meter.

Q5: What is the frequency stability of the USDX?
A: Using TCXO, its operating frequency stability is up to 0.5PPM. Adopting KDS high-precise TCXO, the frequency accuracy and stability surpass similar products.

Q6: How does the Class-E PA work in the USDX?
A: The usDX uses pulse width modulation of the PA supply voltage to transmit modes other than CW while retaining class E efficiency and uses a direct conversion SDR receiver. The basic idea behind Class E nonlinear amplifiers is that transistors have little loss when they are switched fully on or off. A PWM driven class-E design keeps the SSB transceiver simple, tiny, cool, power-efficient and low-cost – no need for power-inefficient and complex linear amplifier with bulky heat-sink as often is seen in SSB transceivers.

Q7: How do I use FT8 digital mode with the USDX?
A: For FT8 (and any other digital) operation, select one of the pre-programmed FT8 bands by double press the rotary encoder, connect the headphone jack to sound card microphone jack, sound card speaker jack to microphone jack, and give a long press on right button to enter VOX mode. Adjust the volume to a minimum and start your favorite FT8 application (JTDX for instance). Users can experiment with FT8, AM, and FM using a computer or mobile phone via Bluetooth.

Q8: What is the receiver performance of the USDX?
A: Receiver noise level MDS: -135 dBm (200Hz BW) at 28MHz. Receiver front-end selectivity: steep tuning frequency -45dB / ten times roll-off +/- 2kHz. Blocking dynamic range: 20kHz offset 123dB, 2kHz offset 78dB. Three independent switchable analog front-end receiver attenuators (0dB, -13dB, -20dB, -33dB, -53dB, -60dB, -73dB) are included.

Q9: Is the USDX firmware open source?
A: Yes, the USDX has open source firmware, built with Arduino IDE; allows experimentation, new features can be added, contributions can be shared via Github. It is optimized and modified based on the open-source work uSDX/QCX-SSB. The open source URL is: https://github.com/threeme3/usdx.

Q10: What is included in the USDX package?
A: The package includes the main unit, a power cable, and a hand microphone. A 12V power supply is not included.

Q11: Who developed the USDX transceiver?
A: The basic work uSDX appears to have been accomplished by Guido Ten Dolle PE1NNZ. It uses pulse width modulation of the PA supply voltage to transmit modes other than CW while retaining class E efficiency and uses a direct conversion SDR receiver. This has an interesting international development process with contributions by many, including Hans Summers G0UPL, Guido Ten Dolle PE1NN, Barbaros Asuroglu WB2CBA, Manuel Klaerig DL2MAN, and others.

Q12: What is the CAT data switch (Menu 8.6)?
A: Please turn off Menu 8.6 (CAT data switch) when FT8 is not used. When the firmware is for CW version, please turn off the CAT data switch in menu 8.6 to avoid the screen displaying incomplete frequency text. For FT8 version: Menu 8.6 CAT data switch should be turned on. At the same time, the radio in Bluetooth mode should be powered by the physical Bluetooth switch. In this way, the radio’s Bluetooth function can be used.

A: Yes, full frequency scanning searches for active signals across all available frequencies, or you can program a scan list of preferred channels.

Q: What is TalkBack on the S890?
A: TalkBack routes your microphone audio to the speaker, allowing you to hear your own voice while transmitting—useful for confirming audio quality.

Q: What is LCR (Last Channel Record)?
A: LCR automatically stores and returns to the last used frequency or channel when the radio is turned back on.

Q: What is TOT (Time-Out Timer)?
A: TOT limits continuous transmission time (typically 3-5 minutes) to prevent overheating and comply with regulations that prohibit excessively long transmissions.

Q: What are Digital RFG and A-RFG on the S890?
A: Digital RFG allows manual RF gain adjustment; A-RFG (Auto RF Gain) automatically optimizes receiver sensitivity based on signal strength.

Q: What frequency steps can the S890 use?
A: Selectable steps: 5 Hz, 10 Hz, 100 Hz, 1 kHz, 10 kHz, 100 kHz, allowing precise tuning across HF frequencies.

Q: What is the +10 kHz shift function?
A: +10 kHz shift offsets your frequency by 10 kHz to avoid interference or access split channels used in some regions.

Q: What is Hi-Cut and Beep on the S890?
A: Hi-Cut rolls off high audio frequencies for clearer reception; Beep provides audible feedback for button presses (can be disabled).

Q: Does the S890 have a keypad lock?
A: Yes, Lock on/off prevents accidental button presses during mobile operation.

Q: What power supply does the S890 require?
A: 13.8V DC — suitable for vehicle installation or base station use with an appropriate power supply.

Q: What microphone connector does the S890 use?
A: 6‑pin modular microphone connector with standard wiring for CB/HF transceivers.

Description:
– The FTM-310DR series has true dual band operation capability: two independent receivers can work simultaneously in different frequency bands or within the same frequency band, supporting simultaneous reception of C4FM/C4FM (V/U, V/V, U/V, U/U). The transmission power is VHF 55W, UHF 50W, and can be switched between three levels: 55W/50W, 25W, and 5W. The heavy-duty heat sink is equipped with FACC (funnel-shaped air convection conductor) to ensure that the transmission power can work stably and reliably for a long time.
– The total audio output power is 6W, implemented by AESS (Acoustic Enhanced Speaker System): the front panel is equipped with a built-in 3W front speaker and a 3W host speaker. By adjusting the phase, output balance, and frequency characteristics of the front and rear speakers, AESS can still provide clear and high fidelity voice communication in outdoor or noisy environments.
– The full dot matrix display provides clear and accurate information, helping users efficiently grasp diverse operating states.

C4FM Digital Mode:
– C4FM is the standard format for professional communication equipment, which has better audio quality (BER: bit error rate characteristics) compared to GMSK. C4FM integrates original error correction technology for YAESU to comprehensively achieve high-quality communication.

Super-DX + ASP (Audio Digital Signal Processor):
– Super-DX can be turned on in both C4FM digital and FM analog modes to improve the sensitivity of the RF amplifier; In FM simulation mode, in addition to Super DX, ASP can also be enabled. ASP provides two modes of AUTO/MANUAL:
AUTO mode: Super DX is normally open, and ASP is automatically activated when a weak signal is detected.
MANUA mode: Press the [S-DX] key to manually switch between Super DX and ASP switches.
– Note: When ASP is enabled, the host speaker is muted, and the 3W front speaker on the control panel can still output clear and powerful audio.

PMG (Primary Memory Group):
– Up to 5 VFO or storage channel frequencies can be stored in PMG and monitored through two independent receivers. The PMG screen displays the reception status of each channel in real-time using a bar chart. You can choose between AUTO or MANUAL mode. AUTO mode automatically polls all PMG channels, can simultaneously monitor up to two channels, and supports two channels to play sound; The transmission automatically jumps to the current receiving channel. The MANUAL mode always monitors the manually selected channel and locks the transmission to that channel; The signal from another channel is displayed on the screen and can be monitored for audio.

MAG (Memory Automatic Grouping):
– Storage channels can be automatically grouped by frequency band, or registered across frequency bands according to personal needs in “My Group (M-GRP)”.

CFL (Custom Function List):
– You can register the 9 most commonly used functions from the 127 menus and enable one click access.

High Resolution Frequency Band Oscilloscope:
– Long press the [BAND] (SCOPE) key to switch between dual reception and spectrum display; The spectrum displays a maximum of 47 channels. Rotate the left knob to shift the frequency range, and the signal at the center mark will be automatically received; Rotate the knob on the right to move the marker, and you can listen to the signal at the marker in
real time and transmit it at the marker frequency at any time.

FM Friendly Digital Function – AMS (Automatic Mode Selection):
– AMS automatically determines whether the received signal is C4FM digital or FM analog, and switches to the corresponding mode.

DG-ID (Digital Group ID) and GM (Group Monitoring):
– DG-ID implements group calling with the same frequency and ID using two digit IDs (00-99); The GM function can automatically monitor the communication status with DG-ID members within the communication range.

Other Functions:
– High sensitivity 66 channel GPS receiver
– 1200/9600bps APRS data communication
– Fully supports for WiRES-X operation
– Main/sub frequency band receiving coverage of 108MHz – 550MHz
– Both the control panel and the front of the host are equipped with microphone interfaces
